Where: Belmont Park, Monmouth Park, Hollywood Park
When: Saturday, July 6th

On Saturday, the favorites will be heavily backed in The Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park, The United Nations at Monmouth Park, and The Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park. Heavy hitters Flat Out, Little Mike and Game On Dude have combined career earnings in excess of $10.5 million. Can the likes of Last Gunfighter, Teaks North or Clubhouse Ride pull an upset (or two)? We’ll take a closer look at these races below.

#4-Flat Out (1-1) is a true horse-for-the-course, with a record of 5-4-0-1 over the Belmont Park main oval. Two races back, he won the Grade 3 Westchester by a head, earning a lofty career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 116. He has also won the last two runnings of the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, Belmont’s premier distance race for older horses. Still, he might be somewhat vulnerable off his first Belmont loss in the Met Mile, a race in which he had no apparent excuse. The up-and-coming #3-Last Gunfighter (2-1) could be the one to knock off the chalk. He’s on a six-race winning streak, and his speed figures continue to rise. This 4YO Chad Brown trainee broke his maiden in his only local start, so you know he handles the track. Plus, he appears to have more upside, and continues to train enthusiastically. I’ll bet on #3-Last Gunfighter to win and show (just in case Flat Out lays an egg) at odds of 8-5 or better, and box him in exactas with #4-Flat Out.

#7-Little Mike (2-1) closed out his 2012 campaign with a shocking victory (at 17-1) in The Breeders’ Cup Turf. However, his subsequent trip to Dubai didn’t work out so well…he finished up the track in both starts. Now he returns to Monmouth Park (where he’s 2-for-2 on the lawn) off a 3-month layoff. He’ll have to contend with other speed, as #3-Russian Greek (30-1), #5-Skyring (9-2) and #6-Harrods Creek (8-1) have all displayed early zip on occasion. This race could set up nicely for the hard-knocking #4-Teaks North (4-1), a millionaire in his own right. The 6YO gelding is coming off a sharp score in a minor stakes at Belmont Park, and you’ll note he won this race in 2011 with a mid-pack trip. It’s déjà vu all over again! I’ll bet on #4-Teaks North to win and place at odds of 7-2 or better.

Finally, #2-Game On Dude (4-5) enters the 74th Running of The Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap on a 4-race winning streak with Mike Smith aboard at a track where he’s 4-3-1-0 lifetime. He’ll be plenty tough to beat, but #1-Clubhouse Ride (2-1) came within a half-length two back in the Charles Town Classic, and broke through for his first graded stakes score last out in the Grade 2 Californian. With that confidence-building win under his belt, and a series of sharp works in the interim, the Craig Lewis trainee could spring the upset with a slight move forward, providing the ‘Dude doesn’t bring his ‘A’ game. I’ll take a shot with #1-Clubhouse Ride to win at odds of 2-1 or better, and box him in exactas with #2-Game On Dude.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
