Posted by Pete Mitchell on 6/22/2012 5:18:07 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds ??? Believe You Can, Contested, Willa B Awesome, Eden???s Moon, Potesta, Killer Graces
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips ??? The Mother Goose, The Hollywood Oaks
Where: Belmont Park, Hollywood Park
When: Saturday, June 23rd

The top sophomore fillies on both coasts will be in action on Saturday. A compact field of five will contest the 56th Running of the Mother Goose at Belmont Park. Later in the afternoon, a competitive group of eight will do battle in the 67th Running of the Hollywood Oaks. Let???s take a closer look at each race below.

A pair of last-out Grade 1 winners will line up next to one another in the Mother Goose. #1-Believe You Can (8-5), upset winner of the Kentucky Oaks at odds of nearly 14-1, will break from the rail. To her immediate outside will be #2-Contested (7-5), easy winner of the Acorn. Both have early speed, so it could be a ding-dong battle all the way to the wire. Although Believe You Can owns the experience edge, Contested appears to be the more brilliant of the two. She also may possess a slight tactical edge, having drawn outside her main rival. Both are a perfect 1-for-1 locally, but Contested has been training over the Belmont strip for more than a month, while Believe You Can arrived from Churchill Downs within the past ten days, just in time for her final pre-race workout on Monday, June 18th. Local standout Jose Castellano, aboard Contested, has to be accorded a slight edge over the talented Rosie Napravnik, the regular pilot of Believe You Can. I???ll bet on Contested to win the Mother Goose at odds of 4-5 or better???I think she???ll be sent off as the favorite, and will reward her backers with her 5th consecutive daylight score.

A trio of Grade 1 winners will head postward in the Hollywood Oaks, and all could be lukewarm in the betting. #1-Willa B Awesome (7-2) is the most accomplished of the group, with five wins overall, and field-best earnings of $593,896. #4-Eden???s Moon (3-1) has been training forwardly since her last-place finish in the Kentucky Oaks, and could rebound in a big way. #8-Killer Graces (4-1) might be overlooked due to her so-so form in 2012, but it???s worth noting that she???s been first or second in all five starts at Hollywood Park. I???ll take a shot against all three of the aforementioned fillies and side with recent maiden grad #6-Potesta (4-1). She won big on the stretchout and surface switch, earning a very competitive Beyer Speed Figure of 90 in the process. She???s been favored in both career starts, and could lead this field on a merry chase with Joe Talamo getting the return call. She gets in light too, with a 113-lb. weight assignment. Potesta looks like an all-or-nothing proposition to me, so I???ll bet her strictly to win at odds of 3-1 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling! ??????
