Spotlight on Sprinters Saturday

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 12/28/2012 4:42:11 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds – Action Andy, Indiano, Great Mills, Byrama, Comma to the Top
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Mr. Prospector, The Daytona
Where: Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita
When: Saturday, December 29th

Speed is the name of the game on Saturday, as some of the East’s top dirt sprinters will line up in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park. Later in the day, a dozen West Coast-based turf sprinters will contest the Grade 3 Daytona on Santa Anita’s downhill course. Here’s a look at some of the contenders.

In the Mr. Prospector, favoritism will go to either #4-Action Andy (6-5) or #6-Indiano (8-5). Action Andy got the better of that rival last out in The Pelican at Tampa Bay Downs, but there are reasons to believe that Indiano can turn the tables on Saturday. You’ll notice that Action Andy was his usual dominant self earlier this year at Tampa Bay Downs, but his Gulfstream Park debut in the Sir Shackleton was a flop…he beat one horse. Indiano, on the other hand, has done well at Gulfstream, with a pair of seconds and a third, in which he earned steadily improving Beyer Speed Figures of 85, 96 and 98. There’s ample speed to keep Action Andy company in this race, so look for Indiano to come running late from his outside post. I’ll bet on #6-Indiano to win at odds of 6-5 or better.

There’s no clear-cut chalk in the Daytona, with #1-Great Mills (4-1) getting the lukewarm nod on the morning line. He’s kept excellent company on the lawn, doing battle with the likes of Mizdirection, Bridgetown, Ben’s Cat, and Chamberlain Bridge, among others. Though he’s won his share, he tends to weaken late against graded company. There’s other speed to his outside, so he’s got his work cut out from the rail. #2-Byrama (8-1), the only filly in the race, loves the downhill course and will be flying late. Her Beyers are a bit on the light side, however. I’m going to take a shot with the classy #3-Comma to the Top (5-1). He’s a few bucks shy of millionaire status, and is in sharp form, having hit triple digits on the Beyer scale in his last pair. The Peter Miller trainee got familiar with the tricky downhill course three races back, and should improve off that 4th-place finish. Regular rider Corey Nakatani is back aboard, and seems to do best with this runner when on or near the lead. I’ll bet on #3-Comma to the Top to win and place at odds of 4-1 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
