Smiling Tiger, Jeranimo the Price Plays

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 6/29/2012 4:23:24 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds ??? Camp Victory, The Factor, Smiling Tiger, Comma to the Top, Little Mike, Jeranimo, Liberian Freighter, Mr. Commons
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips ??? The Triple Bend Handicap, The Shoemaker Mile
Where: Hollywood Park
When: Saturday, June 30th

If you???re looking for value in Saturday???s co-featured Grade 1???s at Hollywood Park, look no further than Smiling Tiger (7-2) in the Triple Bend Handicap and Jeranimo (7-2) in the Shoemaker Mile. Here???s why:

The Factor (5-2) is likely to rebound from his Dubai debacle with a big race in the Triple Bend, but he???ll have company on the front end if Comma to the Top (12-1) and Italian Rules (8-1) run true to their recent form. Both of those rivals break well and both can carry their speed a long way. That???s likely to spell trouble for The Factor in the late stages, with Smiling Tiger (7-2) and Camp Victory (6-1) making their customary late runs. Smiling Tiger lost virtually all chance last out when he lost his footing at the start of the True North Handicap at Belmont Park. He turned in a valiant effort to get up for third, signaling that a return to his top form is imminent. Mike Smith gets the return call, having gotten to know his mount a bit last time. That gate workout on June 22nd could be just what was needed to remind Smiling Tiger that he needs to get away alertly. Also, you???ll note that Smiling Tiger has done his best work at Hollywood Park???he???s a perfect 3-for-3, including a pair of Grade 1 wins, and a lifetime-best Beyer Speed Figure of 112. I???ll bet on the defending champ to retain his title at odds of 3-1 or better.

The Shoemaker Mile may unfold in a similar manner, with speedy shipper Little Mike (3-1) battling it out on the front end with hard-knocking 7YO Liberian Freighter (12-1). That may set the table for closers Jeranimo (7-2) and the favored Mr. Commons (2-1). I???ll take my chances with Jeranimo. He???s not as consistent as Mr. Commons, but on his best day, he???s as good if not better. Note that when Jeranimo beat Mr. Commons in the Oak Tree Mile, he spotted that rival 4 lbs. Garrett Gomez owns a win and a second in his two most recent trips aboard Jeranimo, and may save a bit more ground than Mr. Commons, who has drawn the outside post with a short run to the first turn. Also note that Jeranimo has won 2-of-3 starts over the Hollywood Park sod. I???ll bet on Jeranimo to win the Shoemaker Mile at odds of 3-1 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
