Flashback Will Open As The Favorite For 2013 Santa Anita Derby

Posted by Marco Sussman on 4/3/2013 7:08:54 PM

It is one of the most exciting online sportsbook events of the horse racing season, and a sign that spring is here. The 2013 Santa Anita Derby is right around the corner now, and the anticipation is growing after the odds for the race were released following the post position draw. Flashback will be the favorite to win this year’s Santa Anita Derby at 2/1 odds to win the race, and that is no surprise at all considering how good the horse has looked as the heavy favorite in the pair of races it has won so far already this season.

Flashback was listed at even money when it made its career debut, but that sentiment was out the window after a strong start and now there is little doubt about who the online sports betting favorite is. Flashback has yet to be higher than even money throughout its career so far, but for anyone that wants to get in on the horse this season it makes sense to bet on it now because the line could move drastically as more and more people get on it. Garrett Gomez is a veteran jockey that understands how to get the most out of his horses, and it will be no different with Flashback at Santa Anita.

Another horse that is getting a lot of sports betting attention heading in to this year’s Santa Anita Derby is Hear The Ghost, which has yet to be favored in any race so far this season. Hear The Ghost was a 16/1 pick in its career debut, but 7/2 when he ran second in the San Pedro and 5/1 when he won the San Felipe. Corey Nakatani will ride Hear The Ghost at Santa Antia, and there is some solid upset potential in that pick.

It’s important to mention that Bob Baffert will have three horses in the mix at this year’s Santa Anita Derby, including a horse named Power Broker that figures to have the best chance of the group. Power Broker worked four furlongs Sunday morning at :47, and is tied for the fourth-fastest work at the distance on Santa Anita’s main track. Workmate Bank The Eight was also clocked at :47, and is one of the horses that should have a quality shot to win. The Santa Anita Derby will be Power Broker’s first race since the Breeders Cup Juvenille on this same track last November, and it finished fifth in last year’s race.

One of the most important things to remember in the time leading up to the race is how the number can shift depending on the action that these horse get. There are a number of quality horses racing in this year’s Santa Anita Derby, but Flashback is the favorite and available at a good price right now. That number should change as we move closer to the actual race, so it makes sense to take advantage of it now while possible.
