Preakness Stakes Betting – Bodemeister Tipped To Make Good At Pimlico

Posted by Marco Sussman on 5/14/2012 3:06:58 PM

Many sports betting sharps that tuned in to the Kentucky Derby were stunned to see Bodemeister give up his late lead to I’ll Have Another and have to settle for a second-place run. However, the sportsbooks are considering Bodemeister as the favorite in the second jewel of the Triple Crown race, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

A big reason why Bodemeister is a +140 horse betting favorite in the “Race for the Black-Eyed Susans” (which is named for the bouquet of black-eyed susans that are draped around the neck of the winning horse) is the distance of the race seems to give him an edge. At 1 3/16 miles, which is 9.5 furlongs, it is the shortest of the Triple Crown races and if the Kentucky Derby had been that distance, we would be talking about a Bodemeister victory. Instead, it was I’ll Have Another, who comes into the Preakness on May 19th at +400, who swooped in to steal the show. But Bodemeister was by far the fastest horse of the day and only lost to fatigued, and he is trained by Bob Baffert, who has won the Preakness five times and knows how to train a horse for this distance. But don’t count out I’ll Have Another, who has now won his last three starts; two were Grade-1 stakes races, and the other was a Grade-2.

Went The Day Well is listed at +800 and leads the next group of horse betting options for the Preakness after finishing fourth at the Kentucky Derby, while Creative Cause at +1000, Hansen at +1200 and Liaison at +1500 round out what you would call the second tier of contenders. These horses likely received a bump when it was revealed that Derby third-place finisher Dullahan wouldn’t be making the trip to Pimlico, but Creative Cause has been a horse on the radar of many for most of the season. The fifth-place run at the Derby was the worst of his career as he had never finished outside of the top three, but Creative Cause is well balanced and just needs to get off to a better start, which could be possible at Pimlico because the Preakness has a 14-horse field instead of 20. Hansen was thought to be a horse betting favorite at the Derby before coming in ninth, which was well outside of his usual finishing place as he had not finished lower than second prior to the Derby.

Optimizer kicks off the list of darkhorses at +2500, while Cozzetti and Hierro are next at +3000. The field has not been completely confirmed yet, so there may be more horses being added and subtracted to the bottom of the list. Make sure you confirm the horses that are entered at Pimlico before making your online betting picks for the Preakness.
