Pete’s Picks: Sweet Lulu in The Cotillion, Moreno in The Pennsylvania Derby
By Pete Mitchell

Who: Thoroughbreds – Seaneen Girl, My Happy Face, Sweet Lulu, Close Hatches, Moreno, Will Take Charge
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Cotillion, The Pennsylvania Derby
Where: Parx Racing
When: Saturday, September 21st

A pair of million dollar races for three-year-olds headline the Saturday card at Parx Racing…the Grade 1 Cotillion for fillies and the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby, open to runners of either sex. Let’s take a closer look at these races below.

#9-Close Hatches (5-2) is the lukewarm favorite in The Cotillion on the strength of her romp in the Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont Park in late June. However, she hasn’t run since then because of an illness, so she’ll be spotting her opposition recency, plus 2-7 pounds based on the conditions of the race. She has worked sharply of late for trainer Bill Mott, but will that be enough? #6-My Happy Face (9-2) never runs a bad one, hitting the board in all eight career starts, and #5-Seaneen Girl (5-1) exits a sharp Monmouth Oaks (Grade 3) victory, but both seem a cut below the best in the division. I’m leaning toward #7-Sweet Lulu (7-2), an undefeated (4-for-4) Grade 1 winner trained by Jerry Hollendorfer. She’s won going two turns vs. older fillies and mares, earning a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 99 in the process, and made her dirt debut in the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga a winning one, with an admirable display of guts and class. Her bullet breeze at Hollywood Park on September 11th signals her readiness for a return to the Eastern time zone. I’ll bet on #7-Sweet Lulu to win and place at odds of 5-2 or better.

A nose separated #3-Moreno (5-2) and #7-Will Take Charge (2-1) last out in the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga. Will Take Charge got the win, but there is still controversy brewing about whether or not jockey Luis Saez, aboard the D. Wayne Lukas trainee for the first time, used an electrical device (battery). While that remains unresolved, my selection does not. I’ll be betting on Moreno to capture the 34th Running of the Pennsylvania Derby. He just keeps getting better, yet never seems to receive his fair share of respect at the windows. He broke his maiden at 8-1, romped in the Grade 2 Dwyer at 5-1, and just missed in the aforementioned Travers at 31-1! Wet or dry, I like the speedy Moreno to lead this group on a merry chase and win this event with something left in the tank. He gets a 2-pound break in the weights from his main rival, which should make his task even easier. Will Take Charge has never put three strong races together…I’m looking for regression in this spot. I’ll bet on #3 Moreno to win at odds of 8-5 or better, and will play a straight 7-3 stakes double…Sweet Lulu with Moreno.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
