Pete’s Picks: Mucho Macho Man in Whitney; Include Me Out in Clement L. Hirsch

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 8/2/2013 4:07:12 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds – Successful Dan, Mucho Macho Man, Fort Larned, Cross Traffic, Ron the Greek, Byrama, More Chocolate, Include Me Out

What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Whitney Invitational Handicap, The Clement L. Hirsch

Where: Saratoga, Del Mar

When: Saturday, August 3rd

In a Whitney Invitational Handicap loaded with heavy hitters, Mucho Macho Man has a big shot at a nice price if theSaratoga main track is labeled fast on Saturday. Out West, Incude Me Out seeks to defend her title in The Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar, and will be favored to do so. Let’s take a closer look at these races below.

In what shapes up as perhaps the best race of the year thus far, a quartet of millionaires plus four other accomplished older horses will contest the 86th Running of The Whitney Invitational Handicap at historic Saratoga on Saturday. #2-Mucho Macho Man (6-1) lost last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic by a hard-fought half-length to #3-Fort Larned (7-5), and gets his first chance to turn the tables on that rival in The Whitney. Fort Larned was at the top of his game last out in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs, romping to a 6 ¼-length score and earning a lofty Beyer Speed Figure of 115. He’s also the defending champion in The Whitney, and a deserving favorite. Mucho Macho Man, on the other hand, has disappointed in both starts this year at odds-on, but you’ll notice that both races came on off tracks, which he detests. If he gets the type of fast track he relishes on Saturday, look for him to rebound with a huge effort. He’s also proven to be tractable, and could work out an inside, stalking trip under Edgar Prado, who was aboard last out.#1-Successful Dan (12-1) had won 6-of-7 prior to encountering trouble in the Stephen Foster, so look for a much-improved effort from him. #4-Cross Traffic (5-2), with only four starts, spots this field experience and will be making his 2-turn debut, but there’s no questioning his talent and toughness. Then there’s #5-Ron the Greek (6-1), who should be flying late, and #6-Alpha (10-1), the horse-for-course who won last year’s Jim Dandy and Travers, Saratoga’s premier races for three-year-olds. I’ll bet on #2-Mucho Macho Man to win and place at odds of 9-2 or better, but only if the track is labeled “fast”.

#9-Include Me Out (9-5) looks like a standout in The Clement L. Hirsch. She’s been given plenty of time to recover from her winning 5YO debut effort in Hollywood Park’s Desert Stormer Handicap, and will be toting two pounds less than she did in winning last year’s edition of the Hirsch. A win on Saturday will put this classy mare over the one million dollar mark in earnings. Her outside post appears to be the main obstacle, as there’s a short run to the first turn, and the inside has been the place to be thus far at the meet. Regular rider Joe Talamo will have to find a spot to tuck in and bide his time. If Include Me Out is within a length of the lead as they turn for home, she’ll be very tough to deny. I’ll bet on #9-Include Me Out to win at odds of 4-5 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
