Pete’s Picks: Departing is King of the Derbies

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 9/6/2013 4:17:40 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds – Bashaar, Holiday Mischief, Ruler of Love, Departing

What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Super Derby

Where: Louisiana Downs

When: Saturday, September 7th

Departing looks like a standout in Saturday’s 34th Running of The Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, so the trick may be to figure out who to use underneath. Let’s take a closer look at all seven contenders below.

#1-Bashaar (7-2) : The second choice on the morning line has topped the 90 mark on the Beyer scale in his last three outings. He’s devoid of speed, however, in what figures to be a paceless affair, so he may be left with too much to do in the lane. I’ll try to beat him underneath in the exacta.

#2-Holiday Mischief (10-1) : This guy is in career form, having won the local prep for this race at odds of 16-1, defeating the talented Sunbean in the process. It was nearly seven lengths back to the third-place finisher and another 4+ lengths back to fourth, making that victory even more impressive. Early in the year, Holiday Mischief finished second to Departing in The Texas Heritage at Sam Houston…he could repeat that performance on Saturday with a similar stalking trip. One to use underneath.

#3-Runaway Stephen (20-1) : A stumbling start didn’t help this colt’s chances last out vs. Holiday Mischief, in which he finished a distant third. His closing style probably won’t play well in this spot. Pass.

#4-Treasury Bill (10-1) : First of two Catalano trainees entered hasn’t fared that well going two turns, failing to hit the board in a pair of graded events and finishing a lackluster third last out vs. older first-level allowance/optional claiming foes at Indiana Downs. Siding with others underneath the favorite.

#5-Ruler of Love (6-1) : The field’s second-leading earner ($253,875) finished second to Departing last out in The West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park, 3 ¼ lengths in front of the classy Overanalyze. His tactical speed should serve him well in here. I’ll use him underneath in the exacta, along with Holiday Mischief.

#6-Cameo Appearance (8-1) : Gary & Mary West homebred is trainer Catalano’s other runner in here, and gets a rider switch to Pat Valenzuela. By Majestic Warrior out of a Tiznow mare, he’s bred to handle dirt just fine, but this will be his first start on the stuff, and also his first going two turns. Also a bit mystifying is why he didn’t grab the lead last out at one mile, after leading all the way in his two prior sprint attempts. Lots of questions.

#7-Departing (1-1) : He’s already got The Illinois Derby and The West Virginia Derby under his belt. This would make three…and perhaps The Pennsylvania Derby will be next on the agenda. Departing has enough natural speed to keep the front-runners in his sights, and should blow by them when Albarado says “go”. Millionaire gelding is the clear choice…I’ll bet on him to win at odds of 1-2 or better, and use him over #2-Holiday Mischief and #5-Ruler of Love in the exacta.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for Saturday. Best of luck and happy gambling!
