Pete’s Belmont Stakes Pick: California Chrome to Win Triple Crown

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 6/6/2014 12:24:13 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds – California Chrome, Commanding Curve, Ride On Curlin, Wicked Strong, Tonalist
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Belmont Stakes
Where: Belmont Park
When: Saturday, June 7th

Will the remarkable California Chrome capture the 146th Running of The Belmont Stakes, and in so doing, become the first Triple crown winner since Affirmed in 1978? God knows the sport needs a new hero. I believe California Chrome has what it takes to get the job done. Let’s take a closer look at the case for California Chrome below.

  1. He's the fastest horse, with a trio of Beyer Speed Figures (108, 107, 105) topping any earned by the competition.
  2. He's the main speed in a race sorely lacking in that department. He could conceivably go to the front and never look back.
  3. He's easily rated. If one or more of his opponents makes a move for the lead, he's the picture of patience, waiting for his cue from jockey Victor Espinoza.
  4. He's won six straight…all with the nasal strip and with Victor Espinoza aboard. Only one other member of the field (Tonalist) has won his last race.
  5. Those who knock his pedigree are the same ones who knocked his pedigree prior to his Kentucky Derby victory. His Tomlinson Distance Rating (291) actually ranks 5th in the 11-horse field, and of the four with higher ratings, three finished behind him in the KY Derby and/or Preakness. The fourth, Commissioner, hasn't faced him yet, but is a 20-1 outsider. Furthermore, his 2 3/8th-mile gallops at Belmont Park should prepare him well for this 1 ½-mile test.
  6. He appears to love the Belmont Park main track, and his excellent 4-furlong breeze and strong gallop-out last Saturday attests to his affinity for the surface. This colt has won at five tracks on dirt, cushion and polytrack, so he obviously adapts well to his surroundings.
  7. 'Chrome has the best foundation as a 2YO, with seven races under his belt. Perhaps that's why he has handled the rigors of the Triple Crown campaign so well, and actually looks as if he's gained weight since the KY Derby.
  8. There have been concerns in the past about his tendency to rock back and forth in the gate, leading to the occasional bad break. However, his gate schooling earlier in the week went perfectly…once again, 'Chrome has demonstrated his willingness to learn his lessons. He has become the consummate professional.
  9. He's got push-button acceleration and multiple gears…reminiscent of the great ones like Affirmed.

I'll bet on #2-California Chrome to win the Belmont Stakes, and key him over the usual suspects in exactas and tri's: #4-Commanding Curve (15-1), #5-Ride On Curlin (12-1), #9-Wicked Strong (6-1) and #11-Tonalist (8-1).

Those are my horse racing betting tips for The Belmont Stakes. Best of luck and happy gambling!
