Noble Tune in Penn Mile; Liaison in Californian

Who: Thoroughbreds – Noble Tune, Jack Milton, Rydilluc, Clubhouse Ride, Kettle Corn, Liaison, Blueskiesnrainbows
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Penn Mile, The Californian
Where: Penn National, Hollywood Park
When: Saturday, June 1st

This weekend the spotlight will be on 3YO turfers at Penn National and older horses on Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track. Noble Tune and Rydilluc will vie for favoritism in the 1st Running of The Penn Mile. A few minutes later on the left coast, hard hitters like Clubhouse Ride, Kettle Corn, Liaison and Blueskiesnrainbows will duke it out in the 60th Running of The Californian. Let’s take a closer look at these contentious races below.

The only blemish (if you can call it that) on Noble Tune’s record was a rallying second (without the benefit of Lasix) in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last fall. He’s been favored in all five starts, and may go as the lukewarm choice again on Saturday. He has trained forwardly since winning the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes last out at Churchill Downs, and should work out a ground-saving trip with Javier Castellano back aboard. The main threat figures to come from Rydilluc, who’s a perfect 3-for-3 on the lawn, by a combined 13+ lengths. He’s got excellent tactical speed, so Noble Tune will have to come and get him. With stretchout sprinter Pitch N Roll and the speedy Yougotthatgoinforu to his inside, Rydilluc figures to press or stalk the pace. Jack Milton is an up-and-coming talent from the Todd Pletcher barn, but with just three lifetime starts, he’ll be spotting experience to the two favorites. Charming Kitten was no match for Rydilluc three back, and may have to settle for a minor award. With the expectation of a lively pace, I’ll bet on Noble Tune to reel in Rydilluc and win the inaugural Penn Mile at odds of 3-2 or better.

Liaison appears to have come back better than ever as a four-year-old, and has been closer to the pace in both winning starts. He earned the field’s top Beyer Speed Figure (109) last out, crossing the wire a length-and-a-half in front of Kettle Corn, who earned his career-best Beyer (106) in that race as well. Liaison has done his best running over Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track, as has Kettle Corn, so the surface offers no edge to either contestant. The connections of Kettle Corn will have to hope that the speedy Blueskiesnrainbows will drag Liaison along behind a quick early pace, setting the stage for Kettle Corn’s strong late run. Clubhouse Ride has finished second in five straight, the last three of which were behind the mighty Game On Dude. True, that one won’t be around on Saturday to provide further torment, but Liaison is a capable stand-in. I’ll bet on Liaison to win The Californian at odds of 7-5 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
