About the Race and Track

State-breds get their day in the sunshine Saturday at Santa Anita, as California-breds will run for big bucks all day long. We’ll be taking a look at the 8 and a half-furlong $250,000 Melair for 3-year-old fillies and the $250,000 Snow Chief, which will be contested at 9 furlongs on the grass and is for 3-year-old males.

Last year Doinghardtimeagain was coming off a sprint win in a $200,000 stakes before she got the ideal 3-hole trip in the Melair to win by just over a length with a 94 Beyer Speed Figure.

Surfcup used a similar strategy to win the Snow Chief last year. He was coming off a troubled 4th in a $200,000 stakes but was with the leaders early in the Snow Chief and held all rivals at bay by a half-length with an 88 Beyer.

Longshots With Some Value:  Swiss Lake Yodeler,

Swiss Lake Yodeler draws cozy slot, had a valid excuse last time and has a right to get the trip as her dam is by Northern Afleet, who won at 9 furlongs in Graded company. Alert Bay is proven on grass, has never run a bad race and should get a super stalk and pounce trip.

The Picks: Rovenna, Tamarando (Win)

A classy field of 8 will pit skills in the Melair Saturday. Swiss Lake Yodeler ships back from Turfway Park and she hated the synthetic surface there when out of the money in a Grade 3. She has a big shot to rebound.

Rovenna should be a handful. She broke through in the stakes ranks last year winning a sprint and should be forwardly placed from the sound of the bell. She very well could be the speed of the speed and just may towrope this group around the track.

Wonderful Lie tried winners for the first time in last and it didn’t work out very well.

Magic Spot wanted no part of sprinting but once she was sent long of grass, the light went on. She will have to prove she can win on dirt.

Anniversary Kitty opened career winning on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita but lost her next 3 races while Versye won her only start but she has a right to get the trip as sibling Bud I Crushed It won routing and earned nearly $200,000.

Shakeitupbetty showed talent from Day One and came back fresh to get her diploma earlier this month going short.

Harlington’s Rose is hung outside and has to prove she can win going long.

In the Snow Chief eight will also greet the starter but there are only 2 proven stakes winners in the cast. Alert Bay has now won three in a row and won his first stakes April 5 when he came from 5th of 8 to win the $200,000 Echo Eddie.

He won at a mile at Golden State and the way he was coming away late suggests he can get 9 furlongs.

There is a not a ton of speed in this race so look for Pray Hard to be saying ‘amen’ on the lead. He is reunited with Corey Nakatani, who was aloft for a victory with this runner last year and he had the horse on the lead the entire race.

The other stakes winner to worry about is Tamarando, who was off slowly in the Spiral Stakes last time and never got a chance to show his talent.

He is proven going 9 furlongs on the synthetic, has won a Grade 1 and he has a right to thrive on grass as his sibling Luckarack won 4 times on grass and banked nearly $550,000. The other positive about Tamarando is that his stablemate Pray Hard can soften up the other speed horses.
