Kissable the Choice in Long Island Handicap

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 11/9/2012 5:21:58 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds – Starformer, Hit It Rich, Kissable, Mystical Star, Aigue Marine
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Long Island Handicap
Where: Aqueduct
When: Saturday, November 10th

An interesting field of long-winded fillies and mares will line up Saturday at Aqueduct to contest the 56th Running of the Long Island Handicap at a distance of 1 ½ miles on the lawn. There is no clear-cut favorite, with the 5YO Hit It Rich getting the nod on the morning line at 5-2. Let’s assess the chances of each of the contenders below.

#1-Starformer (8-1): The Juddmonte homebred notched a Grade 3 win in the Robert G. Dick Memorial at Delaware Park in July at a distance of 1 3/8 miles, and followed that up with a distant second to Kissable in the 1 ½-mile Waya at Saratoga in August. Edgar Prado is back aboard, and sports a record of 3-2-1-0 as the pilot of this well-bred Bill Mott trainee. Starformer signaled her readiness with a bullet breeze last Sunday, but you’ll note she has work to do in the Beyer department, with a lifetime-best turf figure of 84. She should keep Hit It Rich honest on the front end, though. Fringe player.

#2-Hit It Rich (5-2): After rattling off a half-dozen 90+ Beyers, the wheels fell of last out in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl at Belmont Park, with Hit It Rich beating one horse after leading early. Perhaps she didn’t like the yielding ground, or maybe it was the classy company that proved too tough for her. She fits well here with a return to her usual form, but as mentioned above, she may not get a breather with Starformer to her inside. Taking a stand against.

#3-Tannery (8-1): After tackling Grade 1 types in both starts stateside, Tannery gets a bit of class relief in this affair. She may also benefit from the addition of Lasix. On the downside, her Beyers don’t stack up and she’ll be stretching out to the longest distance of her career. A possibility to round out tri’s and super’s.

#4-Kissable (4-1): Improving 4YO turned in a creditable effort last out when 4th by less than three lengths in the Grade 1 E. P. Taylor at Woodbine. Her Waya score proves she can handle the mile-and-a half. John V. sees fit to remain aboard, and you’ll note that the 2nd-time Lasix angle comes into play. With an honest pace likely, her closing punch should be flattered. She can also handle any type of going, so course condition should be of no concern. Looking back at her 2YO campaign, you’ll see that she hit the board in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes vs. a field of 12. I like Kissable to turn the tables on Hit It Rich at this longer distance, and will bet her to win at odds of 3-1 or better.

#5-Mystical Star (3-1): 4YO Christophe Clement trainee owns a win over Hit It Rich in the New York Stakes at Belmont Park in June, and exits a game second in the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland last out. Ramon Dominguez takes over the riding chores, so you know the connections are serious. Still, I’m not convinced that she’ll be at her best going this far. Major player, but siding with Kissable.

#6-Aigue Marine (6-1): Interesting UK-bred ships in from France in sharp form, and gets Lasix for her U.S. debut. Surprise package can be used in the gimmicks.

#7-The West Rim (30-1); #8-Senada (20-1); #9-Clarinet (15-1): These three are deserving longshots.

#10-Centring (3-1): MTO probably won’t run.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
