Leaders In The Clubhouse

With the 2 final Kentucky Derby preps in the history books, online sports betting site players now have a better understanding of who will be in the gate the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs.

A total of 20 horses at the most will run on May 4.

Java’s War’s 89 winning Beyer Speed Figure in the Blue Grass earned him 100 points toward the Derby goal and Overanalyze earned the same points winning the Arkansas Derby with an 88 Beyer.

Those two sit 4th and 5th on the Point Standings list and are secured starters if they stay intact.

Orb and Verrazano lead the league with 150 points and Goldencents chimes in at 129 off his Santa Anita Derby success.

Only Revolutionary and Lines of Battle are the other contenders that have hit the triple digit point so far.

The next 6 spots on the lost will find runners that have earned between 50 and 70 points.

Now, it gets a little iffy as to what online betting races are left for some of those on the bubble to try to make the cut.

Four runners, Den’s Legacy, Charming Kitten, Code West and Tiz a Minister are all tied now with 20 points in the 20th and final spot with Super Ninety Nine and Falling Sky just ahead of them with 30 points.

The final two races to earn points come this Saturday in the Lexington and a week before the Derby in the Derby Trial.

Both of those races will offer a point structure of 20,8,4,2 for the first four finishers so runners that are close may want to try to pad their resume.

The problem for runners that try to squeeze into the Derby at this point is the nature of the spacing of the racing. To come back in a week or two weeks and attempt to run the race of you life in the most important and toughest test ever, is a yeoman’s task.

In other Derby news, Vyjack, who has 70 points toward the Kentucky Derby and will start, got a boost when his trainer Rudy Rodriguez was approved for a training license in Kentucky on Tuesday.

Rodriguez, a former exercise rider for Richard Dutrow Jr., who was recently handed a 10-year suspension, is coming off a 20-day suspension for recent overages for painkillers in New York.

The approval comes with a caveat, as per a condition of the license; Vyjack will be subject to around-the-clock surveillance.

Vyjack is a serious horse. He won his first 4 starts, has shown speed but has also shown the ability to come from second to last, like he did winning the Grade 3 Gotham in March.

Vyjack’s only loss came to the unbeaten Verrazano in the Wood Memorial when beaten just a length and he has a right to run all day long.

If you go deep enough into Vyjack’s horse betting pedigree, you’ll find that the third dam dropped over $500,000 winner Miss Slewpy, who won at a mile and a quarter.
