Beating The Point Spread

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 3/27/2013 5:26:43 PM

Things are heating up with runners that have their eye on the Kentucky Derby as far as earning enough points to get into the gate on the first Saturday in May.

This weekend will be the last chance and the last leg for runners to get the needed points and all of the offerings in the next 7 big sports betting Kentucky Derby preps will be worth 100 points to the winner, 40 to the second finisher, 20 to the show horse and 10 for the fourth finisher.

This weekend the 100-point races are the Louisiana Derby, the UAE in Dubai and the Florida Derby.

Next weekend the 100-point races are the Wood Memorial and the Santa Anita Derby.

On April 13, the Arkansas Derby and the Blue Grass will follow the same point distribution as this week’s action.

For those runners on the ‘bubble’ the Lexington on April 20 will be worth 20, 8, 4 and 2 to the respective finishers and the same format will be used for the last prep to be considered the Derby Trial on April 27.

Will Take Charge as of Tuesday is the leader in the betting sites clubhouse with 60 points.

There is a logjam in the second spot with Vyjack, Govenor Charlie, Black Onyx, Orb, Verrazano and Hear the Ghost all with 50 points.

One runner, D. Wayne Lukas’ Oxbow, has 36 points.

The talented Uncaptured and Flashback check in with 30 and Goldencents is a point behind them.

The champion, Shaghai Bobby needs a big run this weekend in the Florida Derby since he only has 24 points.

Four runners have 20 points including Den’s Legacy, Falling Sky and West Hills Giant and there are several others with double digits at this point in time.

This is leaving some talented runners on the outside looking in.

Fear the Kitten, Taken by the Storm, Normandy Invasion and Golden Soul are going to have to dig deep in the final days to get qualified for a chance to Run for the Roses.

This is a new system, but it is a good system. You can already see the changes it has led to and that is for horsemen to point for specific races.

It also clarifies things for fans that may not follow the sport on a day-to-day basis.

As far as the Beyer Speed Figures are concerned for the horse betting preps already run, there are a few horses that have distinguished themselves already.

Itsmyluckyday got lucky in the Holy Bull and he recorded a 104 Beyer. Super Ninety Nine got a slop-aided 102 figure in the Southwest and Verrazano earned a 101 figure taking the important Tampa Bay Derby.

Overanalyze proved his grit last year earning a 99 with his Remsen victory and Orb put up a very respectable 97 in his Fountain of Youth victory.

As the days and weeks dwindle down to May 4 and the Kentucky Derby, keep a keen eye on what moves the key trainers are making to get their runners qualified for this extravaganza.
