Kentucky Derby Betting – Union Rags, Bodemeister Still Top List Of Favorites

Posted by Marco Sussman on 5/1/2012 1:28:01 PM

Sports betting players that follow every type of event will usually come together for the Kentucky Derby, the first jewel in the Triple Crown and the biggest event in thoroughbred horse racing, and this weekend’s edition should be no exception as the “Run For The Roses” goes off for the 138th time at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Union Rags (+350) seems to be the early favorite despite finishing third in the Grade-1 Florida Derby at  Gulfstream Park a month ago, but he has still finished in the top three in all six career races, and that includes four victories. But Bodemeister (+450) has closed the gap after a win at the Grade-1 Arkansas Derby, and even though he never raced as a two-year-old, Bodemeister is one that many horse betting players feel should run away with the race after winning the Arkansas Derby by 9 ½ lengths. The only negative that you can find with Bodemeister is a lack of experience, but that could end up working in his favor.

Then there is a trio of horses that could challenge the top two, Creative Cause (+900), Dullahan (+900) and Gemologist (+900).  Gemologist (Grade-1 Wood Memorial) and Dullahan (Grade-1 Blue Grass) both won their final Derby prep, but Creative Cause (Grade-1 Santa Anita Derby) may have the best resume out of the trio. Gemologist, even though he has won all five career starts, could stand to have a little more experience, but in terms of pure speed and the ability to get out in front early, this may be the horse to watch. Creative Cause has never finished lower than third in eight starts, including four wins, and seven races have been a Grade-1 or Grade-2 stakes race, so he has plenty of experience in the big events.

Hansen (+1100) and I’ll Have Another (+1100) bring up the next group, along with Alpha (+1400), who gave Gemologist a run for his money at the Wood Memorial, but Hansen is the intriguing pick because he won last November’s Breeders Cup Juvenile and hasn’t finished lower than second in five career races. He finished second to Dullahan at the Blue Grass, and Hansen could be an excellent value pick if he can keep up the pace down the stretch as the distance of the Kentucky Derby (1 ¼ miles or 10 furlongs) is a question mark for him.

While there is a place for upsets at Churchill Downs, we’re sticking with one of the favorites and leaning towards Bodemeister, who put on such a show at the Arkansas Derby that you have to give him a strong consideration. He gets out to a lead and doesn’t let up and he has a great stable led by three-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith, who won the Derby back in 2005. Roll with Bodemeister as your No.1 Kentucky Derby online betting pick.
