Horse Racing Betting - Scrambling

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 6/25/2012 4:39:49 PM

With the news that Joel Rosario, who has been on top or right there in the online betting  rider standings in Southern California for the last several years, will move his tack to New York this week, jockey agents and online sports betting enthusiasts should be scrambling to project who will get those coveted live mounts he will leave behind.

The rider on the Thoroughbred Times site, Rosario: “My agent and I talked about making this move a year ago, but the time wasn’t right. When he brought it up this time, I said ‘let’s go do it’. It’s a hard decision to leave because a lot of owners want me to stay and ride their horses but we feel it’s time to try something different and if it doesn’t work out, we can always come back.”

Rosario has won nearly 1,500 races including a couple of Breeders’ Cup event. His agent, Ron Eubanks, has been around the block and back has handled the book of Jorge Chavez in the East and Joe Talamo in the West.

The agent, Eubanks: “I know everyone on the East and I know my rider. I want everyone back there to see how good he is.”

This is a good time for Rosario to test the waters because the big races and the big money is just coming into play in the East at this time of the year and with top Eastern rider John Velazquez sidelined for weeks, the mounts should be there right away.

Rosario will have no problem getting to LAX to fly to New York as rival sports betting agents have lined up to brings him to the airport.

So who will benefit by the new barns and new horses that will open up out West?

Rafael Bejarano, the leader at Hollywood Park this meet, will continue to get the cream of the crop and Talamo, who is second in the standings currently, figures to gain a ton of work right now.

Apprentice Eswan Flores has a whole contingent of owners that are in his corner and he is improving as a rider almost hourly. He figures to thrive at the next stop, Del Mar, and it would be no shock if he gives Bejarano a run for his money as the top dog.

Riders that are currently under the radar, guys like Jose Valdivia, Alonso Quinonez and Mario Gutierrez, who rode the now retired I’ll Have Another, should sneak up the ladder and win races in bunches.

One more guy that online players can’t forget about and that’s Patrick Valenzuela. Since he un-retired, the rider has been fighting weight issues but if there is one thing I have learned over the decades is not to count this guy out.

His weight soared to 129 in May and you just can’t compete on that scale. Since, although his mounts have been light, he is down to 122 and is aiming to get to 120 by the Del Mar meet.

The Del Mar meet traditionally has been very good to P Val. No matter if he is coming there at the top of his game or fighting demons, he always seems to do well when the Surf Meets the Turf.

And with Rosario gone, he may have one more comeback in him according to the best online sportsbook.
