Dude Is Done

Posted by on 6/30/2014 10:35:33 PM

Speed kills; well at least it killed Game On Dude in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita last weekend.

The $500,000-guaranteed mile and a quarter dirt stakes took on a whole new perspective when Fury Kapcori gained the lead from Game On Dude from the get go and led through 3 quarters of a mile.

Dude is best when he can coast on an easy lead and he just didn???t get his trip so Majestic Harbor sat an ideal 3-hole trip and drew off to win by over 6 lengths.

Pace makes the race and is sure did in the Gold Cup.

Game On Dude opened the year on a sour note when he again did not make the early lead. He forced the issue but faded when it counted to finish third to last in the San Antonio.

He rebounded in a big way when forwardly placed early when he won the Santa Anita Handicap but was dueled into submission in the Charles Town Classic. Last Saturday, he was send along hard, tried to re-bid on the rail, but just was taxed from his early efforts and faded to fourth.

Game On Dude has seen better days. He is now 16 for 33 and it could be the time to send him out to pasture. In his 5 wins last year his winning Beyers went from 106 to 114 and he just doesn???t look like the same horse.

Take nothing away from the Gold Cup winner Majestic Harbor. The full horse by Rockport Harbor had trained fast for the Gold Cup and had drilled in :58 and big change just 6 days before the Gold Cup. He is now 6 for 23 in his career and it???s nice to see a smallish barn get some positive ink. He recorded a winning 111 Beyer Speed Figure.

Majestic Harbor is trained by Sean McCarthy and was ridden by Tyler Baze, who has made a nice comeback himself after fighting off alcohol demons.

Baze : ???To do this for Sean, it means a whole lot for the guy that stood by my side. He gave me an opportunity to ride this horse first time out. I???ve gotten to know him, learn about him and learn how to ride him. From the first time I got on him, I told Sean, ???this horse will make you. We???ll win the Breeders??? Cup with him.???

The trainer talked about the perfect trip his student had, McCarthy: ???It worked out perfectly for up pace-wise. The horse had a great week, a great 10 days. The T???s were crossed, the I???s were dotted and you just hope that when you lead him over there, he fires and he fired. This is my first Grade 1 and only my second Graded win. We???ve kind of got a cushion right now, so we???ll just wait and see how he comes of the race.???

This is a Win and You???re In race so he has punched his ticket to the Breeders??? Cup Classic. The next logical spot for him would be the Pacific Classic at Del Mar on August 24 and he again should get a hot pace to rally into.

Stay tuned.
