The Grade 3 Eddie D. Stakes kicks off the stakes action at Santa Anita Friday at about 6 and a half furlongs on the tricky hillside turf course and savvy online sports betting players all know that patience is a key on this surface.

Named for the one of the original Rajun Cajuns Eddie Delahoussaye, 3-year-olds and up will vie for the $100,000 purse.

Delahoussaye, of course, was a legend. He cut his teeth in the Bayou and then blossomed when he came out West. I remember seeing Eddie when he first got to California in a restaurant at Del Mar and he was almost yelling at this agent that he needs live mounts and is not here for some kind of vacation.

I knew right then and there that this guy meant business. And business was good. Eddie D. over the decades won a ton of Grade 1s including consecutive Kentucky Derbies, 2 Belmont Stakes, a Preakness and 7 Breeders’ Cup races. Elected into the Hall of Fame in 1993 and it would be fitting if the winner of this race today gets a perfectly timed race, a staple of Delahoussaye’s style.

A total of 13 entered the Eddie D and it will likely come down to getting the right trip to win.

Let’s pinpoint the horse betting runners from the rail out. Crimson Giant is ambitiously placed as just a one for 17 runner and he’s lost 5 times on grass.

Chosen Miracle will try to steal it using his :21 and small change speed and he’s proven on this course.

Calimonco has been facing tougher and should be rolling late if at all while Koast is a true horse for the course with 2 hillside scores as he is out to make amends after failing as chalk in a $93,000 Del Mar stakes.

Shrug has a nice stalk and pounce style and should enjoy this distance.

Comma to the Top will try to be punctual and he is versatile enough to lead or track and still succeed.

Boxeur des Rues won on turf only once but it was routing but with a hot enough pace, he figures to be making a late impact.

Octane has his tank filled with trouble in his last but he’s proven on grass, has valid speed and has trained fast, as is the custom for runners conditioned by Bruce Headley.

Red Sun could sizzle on opening day. The runner came off a layoff of over a year and run super in his Del Mar finale when beaten a half-length in a $100,000 optional claimer.

Only serious runners are in the money every time and this guy is serious. He has won 5 of 9 with 4 slices. He won on this very hillside to break his maiden, was Grade 2 placed in 2010 and has the blood to thrive as kin to triple grass winner and near $350,000 earner Zippersup.

Tale of a Champion has done all of his winning in Florida and could be a late factor.

Mensa Heat has had a tough year and just was beaten by Comma to the Top while Canuletmedowneasy ran 2nd in both tries on this course but is drawn right and adds to the contention.

Unbridled’s Note was troubled in his last, a Grade 1 at Saratoga but he will be making his turf debut and three siblings tried grass to no avail.

As the race unfolds, look for the pace to be quick, like :43 and change. That could play right into the hands of Comma to the Top, who can sit just off the pace, rally wide and get up in time. Key him first and second in the trifecta with Chosen Miracle, Koast, Red Sun, Unbridled’s Note and Mensa Heat.

Good luck with your online sports book action.
