Dust and Diamonds Will Dust ‘Em in Gallant Bloom

Who: Thoroughbreds – Dust and Diamonds, Musical Romance, Turbulent Descent, Questing, My Miss Aurelia, Alpha, Golden Ticket
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Gallant Bloom Handicap, The Cotillion, The Pennsylvania Derby
Where: Belmont Park, Parx Racing
When: Saturday, September 22nd

A pair of million-dollar races at Parx Racing on Saturday feature strong favorites trained by Kiaran McLaughlin that will be tough to keep out of the winner’s circle. The Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park, on the other hand, appears ripe for an upset by the Steve Asmussen-trained Dust and Diamonds at juicy morning-line odds of 12-1. Find out more below.

#10-Turbulent Descent (9-5) has been favored in every start of her 12-race career, and that will more than likely hold true for the Gallant Bloom. She’s the only member of the field to crack the 100-mark on the Beyer scale (twice), and is in sharp form. She’ll get an honest pace to set up her late charge. Still, she lost her only start at Belmont Park, albeit in the slop, and may have to take the overland route in this field of ten. #9-Musical Romance (5-2) got the better of her in The Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and reports from the Musical Romance camp are very positive. However, that mare can’t seem to put wins back-to-back, so I’ll look elsewhere for value. To me, the value rests with the talented and well-bred #3-Dust and Diamonds (12-1). She’s fast, and benefits from being drawn outside the other speed horse, #1-Roman Treasure (20-1). Her win last out in the Dashing Beauty at Delaware Park was the best of her career. She drew out with ease to win by nearly 6 lengths, and ran straight as a string through the stretch, completing her final furlong in :12 flat. She’s dropping 9 pounds off that effort (123 to 114), and could be long gone here. I’ll bet on Dust and Diamonds across the board at odds of 8-1 or better.

Hats off to Parx Racing for treating race fans to a pair of million-dollar races on Saturday. The rest of the card is loaded with quality as well. In The Cotillion, #2-Questing (1-1) is clearly the horse to beat, despite the presence of the undefeated (5-for-5) #3-My Miss Aurelia (8-5). If Questing runs anything resembling her last three races, she’ll win easily. My Miss Aurelia has a tall order here, especially coming off a single one-turn prep race in 2012. I’ll bet on #2-Questing to win at odds of 2-5 or better. #4-Alpha (9-5) should complete the Kiaran McLaughlin million-dollar double in The Pennsylvania Derby. He has trained smartly since dead-heating with #6-Golden Ticket (5-2) to win The Travers. Alpha lost a lot of ground that day with a 3-to-4 wide trip…he’ll earn a clear victory this time with better racing luck. I’ll bet on #4-Alpha to win at odds of 4-5 or better, as well as a 2-4 double in the million-dollar races.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
