Daytona Stakes Betting - Daytona 500

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 1/8/2013 5:46:20 PM

What: Daytona Stakes
 Who: Byrama (win)
Where: Santa Anita
When: Saturday, December 29

The Daytona 500 is just that; 500 miles of grueling pavement for NASCAR fans. But the horse betting Grade 3 Daytona Stakes is more about the about 6 and a half tricky furlongs on the Santa Anita grass course.

Last year Caracortado rebounded from a poor effort in the BC Turf Sprint when beaten 3 lengths to come from 13 lengths back to win the Daytona going away with a 101 Beyer.

In 2011, only 4 entered this race, this year a dozen are in the line up.

Great Mills was also beaten 3 lengths in the BC Turf Sprint and he will break from the rail today. The inside has always been a tricky post down the hill unless a runner has speed and this guy has the zip to flee the fence and still gain position.

This guy’s last race came back live as the show horse took a $70,000 stakes next out and an also ran won a $100,000 optional next out.

Mills proved he fits in this league by losing by a neck in a Grade 3 in September.

Byrama has a nice betting sites turn of late foot and he has been freshened since losing on this course by three quarters of a length in October.

Comma to the Top is proven fresh but only 2 of his 10 wins came on turf while Starspangled Heat has limited speed and is making his stakes debut.

Circa’sgoldengear is a very good earner, has been in the money in 13 of his 16 starts and he won on this course against optional claimers in the past.

Clubhouse Ride has some back class to draw from but has only won once this year and that was all out against a softer group.

Capital Account won a Grade 2 at Del Mar this summer and was 2nd beaten a head in the Grade 1 SA Sprint Championship. The thing he needs to prove is that he can win on grass.

Guest Star took awhile to figure it out but he was far from disgraced in this first start vs. winners. He does seem ambitiously placed in his first stakes attempt.

Red Sun was on the wrong surface in last but he will likely have to come from the clouds to have a chance to win.

Wilkinson is out to prove his 44-1 win in his last stakes try was no fluke. Since he is exiting a route, he could find himself behind the 8 ball turning for home.

Ain’t No Other has been on this course 4 times and has zero wins. He had no apparent excuse in his last race as the beaten chalk up north.

Tale of a Champion has won 4 times this year, all in Florida and his California form leaves much to be desired.

Great Mills will be hard to catch but he figures to be struggling in the final furlong. Look for Byrama, a 2-time winner on the hill, to settle early, reach sports betting contention crossing the dirt, and prevail late blowing by the leaders.

Good luck.
