Citation Handicap Betting - Big Cy

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 11/20/2012 5:17:42 PM

What: Citation Handicap
Who: Doubles Partner (win)
Where: BetFair Hollywood Park
When: Friday, November 23

Citation, also known as Big Cy, won the Triple Crown in 1948 and was the first horse to earn $1 million and the race named in his honor will be showcased this Friday at BetFair Hollywood Park.

The Grade 2 $250,000 8 and a half furlong turf fray has attracted a quality field for online sports betting site enthusiasts to evaluate.

This race kicks off the three-day Turf Festival and quality will abound in the next few days.

Jeranimo will try to become the third repeat winner of the Citation. A true ‘horse for the course’, Jeranimo has won three of his 4 races on the Hollywood grass including the Grade 1 Shoemaker in June with a 100 Beyer.

Ultimate Eagle has speed and he will be using it from the rail on Friday. He is only making his third start this year but has trained like the proverbial Swiss clock for this event.

Doubles Partner is repeatedly proven off the bench and he comes off a loss to Wise Dan, who won on BC Day and is a lead candidate for Horse of the Year honors.

Data Link will need plenty of help up front. The colt only won twice this year and it was against softer and smaller fields. Tale of a Champion has a right to show speed coming out of the BC Turf Sprint but he has never won in Graded company.

Calimonco will be a price. He has never won locally and his lone win this year came in a much easier spot. Temple’s Door appears to be on the fragile side as his races have been spaced and his only online betting win this year came in an optional claimer.

Interaction took a Group 1 in Argentina, but that was in 2009. Since he has only won once by a nose in a $100,000 claimer. Drawn outside, would expect his rider to try to get to the rail, save ground, then make the one run.

When the gates spring open, look for this scenario. Ultimate Eagle will be sent to the lead from the sound of the bell. Tale of a Champion could inherit the two-hole with Jeranimo possibly getting the ideal three-hole journey and Doubles Partner about 4 lengths off the lead.

Ultimate Eagle will be very hard to collar and he has proven in the past that he doesn’t absolutely need the lead to win. But, the riders in the room know how to read a Racing Form too and the feeling is that somebody will push the Eagle so hard, he will not be able to fly high enough to earn the top prize.

His trainer, Michael Pender, is a solid conditioner, but he has only won 19 races all year.

That leaves us with a tried and true player in the game; Todd Pletcher and his student Doubles Partner.

This runner won a Grade 2 as a sophomore, he had little chance two back when Little Mike got away on the lead and he was only beaten a length in the Grade 1 Turf Classic in May.

With anything close to an honest horse betting pace, and Doubles Partner nails them late.
