There’s a slew of Grade 1 races this weekend at Belmont Park and Santa Anita, with many of the participants using these events as final preps for the Breeders’ Cup in early November. We’ll focus on horses prepping for the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic as well as the Breeders’ Cup Classic. They’re entered in one of the following races this Saturday: The Beldame Invitational or Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, or the Zenyatta or Awesome Again at Santa Anita. Let’s take a look at the major players below.

If #3-Royal Delta (1-1) is at her best, she’ll be very tough to deny in the Beldame. #6-It’s Tricky (7-5) is a top-class filly in her own right, and you’ll note she’s a perfect 2-for-2 at Belmont Park (both Grade 1’s). However, these two have met four times, with Royal Delta owning a 3-1 edge, including an emphatic score in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic at Churchill Downs. Royal Delta has been training as if she’s ready for a top effort. Her best will be good enough. I’ll take Royal Delta to win at odds of 3-5 or better, and also a straight 3-6 exacta, Royal Delta over It’s Tricky.

The Jockey Club Gold Cup is an incredibly contentious event, with all but #10 Game Ball (50-1) looking like they have at least a shot at top honors. #1-Ron the Greek (5-2) has been first or second since Bill Mott took over the training chores eight races back. Included are a pair of Grade 1 wins earlier this year. He figures to be right there at the finish. The connections of #4-Hymn Book (5-1) are pointing for this race, so the hard-hitting 6-year-old gelding should be at his absolute best over a surface he relishes (4-2-2-0). #5-Fort Larned (7-2) is finally figuring things out, and might have the most upside of this bunch. I’m leaning toward #9-Flat Out (3-1), who’s a perfect 2-for-2 at Belmont Park, including last year’s edition of this race. This will be the third start of his form cycle, and it will be interesting to see how he gets along with the ultra-talented Joel Rosario, who will be aboard for the first time in the afternoon. I’ll bet on #9-Flat Out to win at odds of 5-2 or better.

The Zenyatta is equally contentious, with five starters listed at morning line odds of 6-1 or lower. None would be a shock to see in the winner’s circle, but I’m sticking with the Chilean-bred #1-Amani (3-1). This newly-turned 4YO was a sensation in her native country, and has performed admirably in a pair of Grade 1 starts stateside, the latest of which came against males. Amani did all of her running on dirt in Chile, so her return to that surface in the Zenyatta is significant. I’ll bet on #1-Amani to win at odds of 5-2 or better.

#1-Game On Dude (3-5) is arguably the top horse in the country, and should get the job done in the Awesome Again at a short price. He’s a perfect 4-for-4 at Santa Anita, and will be looking to run that record to 6-for-6 if he’s successful on Saturday, and after that in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Rafael Bejarano takes over the mount from Chantal Sutherland. There’s little value here, but I’ll make a token bet on #1-Game On Dude to win at odds of 1-2 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for the weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
