Betting Belmont Stakes - Another Triple Crown Winner?

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 6/4/2012 7:31:55 PM

The online betting sites question surrounding the Saturday action in New York will be if I’ll Have Another can become the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown and here are a few pros and cons for online sports players to think about.

First, let’s look at how I’ll Have Another has gotten to this point in his career. This horse has been value on the tote board and he has never gone favorite in his 7 starts. He has won at 9-2, 43-1, 15-1 and he was the 3-1 second choice in the Preakness.

I’ll Have Another is also from the wrong side of the tracks and cost only $35,000. That’s chicken feed in this spot and he pretty much has come from nowhere. Considering that the last 4 Triple Crown winners were champions at 2, I’ll Have Another has some things to prove that he belongs in legendary status.

Getting to the young rider, Mario Gutierrez, one has to fret a little if he will be able to handle the pressure. Kent Desormeaux, who lost the Belmont on Big Brown, has been quoted as saying this is a very tough race to ride and win. While Ron Turcotte, who rode arguably the greatest horse of all time, said winning the Belmont Stakes was easy and that’s easy to say because he was on 31-length winner Secretariat.

Gutierrez will have his homework done and his T’s crossed before the Belmont Stakes. Richard Migliore, who knows Belmont like the back of his hand, will share his knowledge of the track with Gutierrez by circumventing the 1 and a half mile oval on horseback a couple of days before the big race.

This can only help Gutierrez become comfortable and he will come to the race fresh as he took time off to visit Canada and will have a week’s worth of mounts at Belmont before the Belmont Stakes.

I’ll Have Another also will not scare anybody away in the Belmont as Dullhan, a solid third in the Derby and Union Rags have been freshened for this third jewel.

Now consider some things that trainer John Veitch said when interviewed by DRF’s Marty McGee.

Veitch, of course, trained Alydar, who was the bridesmaid to Affirmed’s wedding.

When asked by the best sportsbook online if he thought that I’ll Have Another would win the Belmont, the trainer made some interesting points.

Veitch: “I think it will be his toughest challenge. He’s going to face two horses superior to him at the distance that are reasonably fresh (Dullhan and Union Rags). I think Gutierrez has ridden two tremendous races, but the Belmont, to me, is not only a horse’s race but a jockey’s race. It’s run at such a unique distance on the dirt that sometimes inexperience is a detriment. We say that with Spectacular Bid and Ron Franklin.

Another thing to consider about the Belmont Stakes is what if it comes up wet? Some websites this far out have a forecast for a few thunderstorms possible on June 9 and I’ll Have Another’s only poor effort came on a sealed sloppy strip at Saratoga last year.

For online players, value will be all over the Belmont Stakes tote board if you want to bet against I’ll Have Another and going a mile and a half is a whole new ballgame. It’ll be a case of jumping on the bandwagon, or shooting for the moon and trying to get paid.

Good luck with your Belmont Stakes betting and the selection will come later in the week.
