Bet Kentucky Derby - Making A Point

Posted by Brian Mulligan on 2/19/2013 5:43:37 PM

As most know, this year’s eligibility for the Kentucky Derby has a new system for determining who will be in the gate the first Saturday in May and online betting site players should aware of where prospective runners stand in the next few weeks.

This race has been a tried and true staple for decades so this new system is a pretty significant change to the event.

A field of 20 horses will be made up through a system in which points will be earned in selected prep races.

Under the prior sportsbook system, earnings were the basis of entry as the top Graded earners got the privilege to race in the Derby.

This is probably a very good idea in the long run especially if there are tweaks to the system depending how things roll out.

The new system put too much value on juvenile sprinters and some venues that had inflated purse structures because of slots, also tipped the scales the wrong way.

This is a good stepping-stone but more changes should come in the future. For now, this is how things will work.

The Churchill Downs staff has not selected 36 races to garner points and this is a cut back from the 185 events world wide that were previously used for determination.

The Kentucky Derby Prep Season is about to close at the end of February and it featured a 10-4-2-1 point scale for the top 4 finishers.

The Championship Season will then go on for 10 weeks and those races will offer a 50-20-10-5 point scale.

And the biggest prep events, the Florida, Santa Anita, Arkansas and Louisiana Derbies, the Wood Memorial, Toyota Blue Grass and UAE Derby in Dubai will offer a 100-40-20-10 point scale.

And finally, like the Wild Card in baseball, the Lexington and Derby Trial will offer a 20-8-4-2 point format for runners specifically on the bubble.

The purpose of the change in format by the brain trust at Churchill was to create new racing fans.

The horse betting system has some routes in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and PGA’S FedEx Cup.

As far as the point leaders so far, know that it is a long way before anything is close to being determined.

Shanghai Bobby and Goldencents are the leaders in the clubhouse with 24 points apiece.

The LeComte winner Oxbow is alone in third with 11 points while there is a traffic jam for the 4th spot with a number of runners that have earned 10 points so far.

Those runners include the likely Fountain of Youth chalk this week, Violence, the Holy Bull winner Itsmyluckyday, the Remsen winner Overanalyze and the Bob Baffert trio of Flashback, Den’s Legacy and Power Broker.

Interestingly, of all the preps so far, only one runner has posted a triple-digit Beyer. That was Itsmyluckyday, who earned a 104 figure.

For online sports betting site players, try to pay attention for where runners stand as far as points as the Derby gets closer. It could be a case of pointing for a particular race or using a race as a springboard if the needed points have already been earned.
