Belmont Stakes Betting – I’ll Have Another Looking To Make History

Posted by Marco Sussman on 5/21/2012 2:44:50 PM

Online betting players are probably going to be paying a little more attention to the Belmont Stakes than usual when the final jewel in horse racing’s Triple Crown is run on June 9th at Belmont Park. I’ll Have Another became the 33rd horse in history to win the first two jewels, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and now he aims to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the vaunted Triple Crown. However, he’ll have to do it in a grueling race called “The Test of the Champion” because of its 1.5-mile distance, the longest of the Triple Crown races.

I’ll Have Another is favored at +250 after stunning Bodemeister with another late-race surge down the backstretch as he barely nipped him to the line, and now one race stands between I’ll Have Another and immortality. Of course, it’s going to be easier said than done as he’ll have a full slate of competitors (Bodemeister will sit this race out), led by Union Rags at +350, Paynter at +400 and Dullahan at +450. Union Rags was a horse betting favorite at the Kentucky Derby before he faded back to a seventh-place finish, but he has won at Belmont Park before, the Grade-1 Champagne Stakes last October.

The Kentucky Derby was the first time in seven races that Union Rags finished outside the top three, so look for a better run this time around. Paynter has won one of this three starts and has gone up against I’ll Have Another before, finishing fourth in the Grade-1 Santa Anita Derby in April while I’ll Have Another came away with the win. Dullahan came in third at the Kentucky Derby and in nine career races, he has finished outside the top three twice and has a pair of victories in Grade-1 races, although both came at Keeneland.

Mark Valeski (+800) leads the group of horse betting sleepers for this race, and since finishing fourth in his first maiden attempt, he hasn’t finished outside the top two in five races, including three wins. There will be a few horses that are making their 2012 Triple Crown debut, such as Atigun (+4500), Unstoppable U (+5000) and Guyana Star Dweej (+6000), but all the attention will go to the horses at the front of the pack, which it should.

I’ll Have Another has run a lot in the last few weeks and it’s tough to ask him to beat out another talented group of challengers over 1.5 miles. They don’t call the Belmont the “Test of the Champion” for nothing, and I’ll Have Another will put up a good fight, but he’ll fall short in his quest for history. Take Dullahan for a little sports betting value at +450.
