Filling The Void

Posted by on 5/20/2014 9:32:45 PM

Brilliant rider Rafael Bejarano will be sidelined at least another 4 to 5 weeks after he took a horrible spill and there will be several jockeys at Santa Anita that are all but happy to fill the void.

Online sports betting site players should pay attention to the barns that used to use Bejarano almost exclusively and whom they will now hire.

Bejarano, of course, has dominated this Southern California circuit for years. He had an excellent winter winning the riding title by a convincing margin. He had 93 happy endings after 384 mounts for a solid 24% rate. Only Hall of Famer Gary Stevens won at a higher percentage.

Joe Talamo and Tyler Baze finished 2nd and 3rd to Bejarano at the winner meet and they are the logical heirs apparent to the throne but there are others that could sneak into the top spot with a little racing luck.

The youngster Drayden Van Dyke has gotten into some good barns already and he seems to be a fast learner. Players should stick with this kid on the main track. He is equally adept with sprinters and routers but like with most young pilots, he can struggle to figure out the complexities of winning on grass.

When Corey Nakatani is thinking right, there are few riders in the country better. He’s excellent on grass and he could sneak right into the Jerry Hollendorfer barn and that’s a good thing. Hollendorfer used Bejarano on almost all of his live horses to this is a situation that needs to be watched.

Edwin Maldonado has quietly had a very nice career in SoCal and he could very well benefit by the absence of the leading rider. Edwin gives the bettors a run for the money every time. He tries hard as evidenced by the fact he has won 11 of his recent 76 mounts but also has been in the money a dozen times.

Fernando Perez is a jockey that seems to be improving hourly. He is another that rides hard in every race. He has won 8 races this meet, with 8 seconds and 9 thirds. His average payoff has been 9-2 and he excels with routers.

Martin Garcia is heavily entrenched into the Bob Baffert barn but because he is very good with speed horse, he should find himself to get some very good future mounts.

And with the action switching to Los Alamitos soon, look for Agapita Delgadillo to pick up some business. Delgadillo is an excellent longshot rider. At the current meet his average win payoff is nearly $22 and he has teamed up with Eric Kruljac to pop with a $54.80 runner.

Face it; this is a business. Nobody, especially a fellow rider, wants to see anybody hurt but they all know it could very well be them but people still have to eat and races have to be won.

Follow the money; follow the top barns and whom they turn to now that Rafael is healing.
