Who: Thoroughbreds – Den’s Legacy, Goldencents, Manando, Jaycito, Ultimate Eagle, John Scott, Coil
What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Sham, The San Pasqual
Where: Santa Anita
When: Saturday, January 5th

Trainer Bob Baffert has a half-dozen bullets ready to fire this Saturday in a pair of graded stakes events at Santa Anita. He’s got two promising three-year-olds ready to tackle likely favorite Goldencents in the Grade 3 Sham. He’s got four more entered in the Grade 2 San Pasqual for older horses, including morning-line favorite Coil. Which Baffert runners will get the job done? Find out more below.

#2-Goldencents (4-5) has done little wrong in his brief career, winning two, including the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot, and finishing second to the undefeated Shanghai Bobby in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park. He’s been training brilliantly of late at Santa Anita, and will certainly take a lot of beating. Still, there are reasons to take a stand against Goldencents. His low price will be unappealing, and it looks like he’ll be challenged on the front end by #3-Greeley Awesome (20-1) and the Baffert-trained #6-Manando (3-1). That could soften him up for the other Baffert runner, #1-Den’s Legacy (3-1). Den’s Legacy weakened in the Grade 1 Frontrunner here last September, but that was his first try on dirt and his first around two turns. Since then he’s hit the board in four straight, with a win in the Grade 3 Generous on grass two back and a solid third in the Grade 1 Cash Call Futurity last out. In his final work for this engagement, he blazed four furlongs in :46 2/5 handily to earn the bullet, signaling his readiness for a top effort. I’ll bet on #1-Den’s Legacy to win at odds of 3-1 or better, and box him in the exacta with #2-Goldencents.

It appears that Baffert has the San Pasqual surrounded, so the trick will be to pick the right Baffert runner. Millionaire #6-Coil (5-2) is the most accomplished. He owns a trio of triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures and a pair of Grade 1 victories, and has been training lights out. Still, Baffert restricted this talented horse to one-turn races throughout 2012, so you have to wonder of he’ll be at his best stretching back out. I’m taking a shot with #1-Jaycito (5-1), a horse that has never quite lived up to expectations. He finally cracked the 100-mark on the Beyer scale last out, defeating some tough customers like #3-Tres Borrachos at Hollywood Park around two turns. Perhaps he’s now ready to fulfill his potential. Jockey Julien Leparoux gets the return call off that victory, so it looks like now’s the time to pounce. I’ll bet on #1-Jaycito to win and place at odds of 4-1 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling in 2013!
