Pete’s Pick: Cairo Prince in The Holy Bull

Posted by Pete Mitchell on 1/24/2014 9:14:32 PM

Who: Thoroughbreds – Coup de Grace, Almost Famous, Mr Speaker, Cairo Prince, Wicked Strong, Intense Holiday

What: Horse Racing Betting Tips – The Holy Bull

Where: Gulfstream Park

When: Saturday, January 25th

A field of 11 three-year-olds is expected for the 28th Running of The Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. There are plenty of promising runners in this group who could make noise in the run-up to the Kentucky Derby. Let’s take a closer look at the major contenders.

#1-Coup de Grace (4-1) is a perfect 2-for-2 and will be making his stakes and two-turn debut for trainer Chad Brown on Saturday. Jockey John Velazquez will take over the mount for Javier Castellano, who will be riding Wicked Strong in the race. Coup de Grace has a win over the track and signaled his readiness for the Holy Bull will a bullet work at Palm Meadows last Sunday. He’s got tactical speed, and should be saving ground on or near the lead into the first turn. He’s been odds-on in his first two starts, so something in the neighborhood of 7-2 might be appealing to some, although I’ll be looking elsewhere. #4-Almost Famous (8-1) got back on track with the addition of blinkers last out, defeating entry-level allowance foes at Churchill Downs in front-running fashion. He’ll be reunited with jockey Calvin Borel, who rode him to victory in his career debut. Almost Famous appears to be the quickest horse in the field, and if he gets the early lead, look for Borel to move to the rail take the shortest route to the finish line. Almost Famous is proven at the distance, and could prove tough to catch. The stakes-winning #6-Mr Speaker (5-1) has gotten better with every race, and will try dirt for the first time on Saturday. He’s certainly bred for it, being by Pulpit out of an Unbridled mare, and his swift works at Payson Park suggest he’ll handle the surface switch. The Phipps homebred is very live at odds of 4-1 or better.

#8-Wicked Strong (8-1) and #11-Intense Holiday (6-1) finished third and fourth respectively in The Remson, behind Honor Code and Cairo Prince. Both were sent off at 10-1 that day, and should be close in the betting again on Saturday. Wicked Strong closed with a rush in The Remson, and galloped out strongly past the wire. Because of Intense Holiday’s outside post, Wicked Strong may enjoy the better trip in The Holy Bull, and go off at a slightly lower price. Both horses might be better suited to longer distances. #7-Cairo Prince (3-1) is my pick to win The Holy Bull. He should get a perfect stalking trip, and has already defeated several in here. He lost the Remsen in a heartbreaker to the highly-regarded Honor Code after spotting that rival six pounds and racing wide throughout. The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee has a tendency to wait on horses after taking the lead…hopefully he’s learning his lessons and will not require a perfectly-timed ride to get the job done. Jockey Luis Saez knows the horse well and recent works indicate that ‘Prince is ready to roll after the freshening. I’ll bet on Cairo Prince to win at odds of 2-1 or better.

Those are my horse racing betting tips for this weekend. Best of luck and happy gambling!
