What???s The Point?

Posted by on 3/3/2014 8:09:54 PM

Granted, the system that is used now to qualify horses for the Kentucky Derby is not perfect, all online betting site players know that nothing is, but it is an improvement.

The system now awards points to the top 4 finishers in 30 some odd stakes leading up to the first Saturday instead of qualifying Derby starters by Graded earnings.

This puts more emphasis on the key preps on the Triple Crown Trail and horse racing bettors need to read into this figures as the weeks go on because the points that are offered will give a glimpse into a runner???s intentions in any particular race.

None of the races in the new systems are less than a mile, which ensures that runners have at least the ability to get 8 furlongs.

Players should be aware of how many points a horse has or needs as these races unfold. A trainer that has already qualified for the Derby in all likelihood might not put his runner through a hard campaign in the days leading to the Derby so he has a fresh horse.

On the other hand if time is running out as far as qualifying, runners could be pushed into spots that are extremely challenging.

Try to read in between the lines as are as intention is concerned.

Last year, Orb earned 150 points to qualify for the Derby, as did Verrazano. Goldencents was next at 129, Java???s War had 122 and Overanalyze, Revolutionary and Lines of Battle all had at least 100 points toward qualifying.

Interestingly, when all was said and done, form won over the day as Orb took the Kentucky Derby but Golden Soul, who had only accumulated 14 points, was a shocking 2nd in the Derby at 34-1.

Revolutionary finished third, Normandy Invasion (44) points finished 4th and Mylute and Oxbow, who were 16th and 17th on the point list, finished 5th and 6th.

After the Samratt???s Gotham win on Saturday, the colt???s point total moved to 60. Uncle Sigh was just a neck off Samratt and his point total now goes to 24. The returning In Trouble picked up 10 points with his Gotham third and Financial Mogul got on the point board with a 4th earning 5 points.

Intense Holiday has earned 53 points. Wildcat Red has 50 and Albano was up to 24. Tapiture comes next at 22 and Vicar???s in Trouble and General a Rod both have 20.

Six runners, Havana, Cairo Prince, Honor Code, Tamarando, Midnight Hawk and Bold Holder had between 11 and 14 points.

Rise Up, We Miss Artie, Candy Boy, Noble Moon, Ami???s Holiday, Cleburne, Tanzanite Cat and Top Billing all have earned 10 points.

Next week there will be two important stakes run and they also will have a 50, 20, 10, 5 structure of points for the first 4 finishers.

The San Felipe will be run at Santa Anita and Florida fans will be treated to the Tampa Bay Derby.
