The Forbidden Apple

Posted by on 7/3/2014 10:32:38 PM

On the fourth of July older turf performers will pit skills at a mile in the $150,000 Forbidden Apple and online sports betting site players have some decisions to make.

A total of 8 have entered the Forbidden Apple with Dawly a main track only runner.

From the rail out, let’s look at the candidates.

Plainview has legit speed but he has a tendency to get late. He brings 1:10 and change speed to the party but usually is life and death to hold on to a lead.

Bio Pro went through his conditions out West and he won a $76,000 restricted stakes last year. His only poor effort this season came in a Grade 2 and he is coming to the race right controlling the pace and the outcome on a yielding course last time against optional claiming foes.

General Logan has options. He was entered at Monmouth Park today but he has never been in the money in his stakes attempts. He only beat one rival home last time in a race he had to need.

Za Approval will be trying to improve on his millionaire status. Beaten less than a length last year in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at 18-1, the gelded son on Ghostzapper was steadied two back when failing to Wise Dan and just flattened out last time. He showed renewed energy in his last workout and should give a good account of himself.

Dawly got an ideal trip last time to win as the chalk but he only beat 4 foes in the process.

Kharafa has won half of his 10 turf starts at Belmont and he was professional beating New York-bred foes last time.

Hamp depends on an honest pace and clear sailing to show his top talent. He shipped into Pimlico in April and stole a $100,000 stakes by a head and he has not raced since running out of the money in a Grade 2 in mid-May. He has lost his last 3 comeback attempts.

Sayaad is a lightly raced runner but talented. He will be making his 2014 debut and boasts a best of the morning :47 and change drill just a week ago.

Look for Sayaad to try to steal this race. He should be on the muscle since he is fresh, he is proven off the vacation and he showed his class at Saratoga last year when he won a $100,000 stakes inching away late.

But Za Approval gets the call. The Christophe Clement student just exits the best races. He is a multiple Grade 3 winner, has a solid stalk and pounce style and he figures to sit a good trip if the rail runner Plainview guns early and forces the hand of Sayaad.

One could easily envision a trip where he will settle nicely for Joel Rosario, probably lie about 6 or 7 lengths off the pace, then start to gather in the pace setters at the top of the lane.

By this time the leaders should be wilting and Approval can get the applause of the crowd.
